Maths - geometry

We have been learning about shapes and position words. Position words tell us where something is or where it is going. 

We use words like: On the cushion, on the mat, In front, behind, the back of the class, around, under, beside, between, middle, on top, in, through, out, off. 
We have also learned about turns and can make full and half turns. Quarter turns were new for us and can be tricky.

Task: Pick a picture of the blocks in a pattern (dont show your buddy). Using our maths words describe how to make the pattern. Remember to give accurate clear instructions.

Success Criteria:
  • I use the correct names for shapes

  • I  give clear instructions about position
  • I follow postion instructions

Reflection

I can: make a half turn an I can tell people how to make the pattern.

It was hard when: doing 1/4 turns and 1/2 turns.

I really liked: learning outside and playing Simon says to help me learn the position words.

Charlotte, you have worked hard to learn our maths position words. Learning outside and playing games helped us all to learn what the position words were and to have a go at 1/4 and 1/2 turns. Keep on practising using the words (especially 1/4 and 1/2 turn) rather than pointing with your hands when you make the shape patterns with your buddy and it will get easier and easier.

Whakawhanaungatanga



We have been learning all about whakawhanaungatanga and what it means. We think it is all about getting along better, including everybody and being in a team.

When we are showing Whakawhanaungatanga we will :

 
See:  people sharing and noticing other people

Hear:  kind words, encouraging words like "ka pai", "good job”, “can I help?"

Think about: about other people, listen and share.


Task: Listen to your buddy and learn some things about them. Work together to create a poster sharing what you have learned about each other. Remember to practise using encouraging words, to share ideas and to notice how you your buddy might be feeling. 

 Success Criteria:

  • I shared my ideas with my buddy.
  • I show whakawhanaungatanga in and out of the playground.

I show whakawhanaungatanga when: I notice that people are sad and then I help them.

It was hard when: asking people "are you alright?" when you don't know them.

Charlotte, you are a delightful young lady and I love the way you notice how people are feeling or when they might be feeling left out. You use classroom games to show whakawhanaungatanga by making sure you include everybody and pick people who haven't had a turn yet. It can be tricky to talk to people you don't know and ask if they are ok, especially when they are bigger than you, maybe having a buddy with you for support might help.

When I grow up

My favourite thing to do at school is play on the climbing wall. When I grow up I want to be a popstar because popstars sing.

It looks like you are having a great time on the climbing wall! The playground is a great place to explore and try new things. I have notices that you love to share your singing during school signing and class singing.
